Early in our evolution humans were able to fend off viruses that would normally kill chimpanzees by creating a protein that neutralized these viruses. Skip ahead a few thousand years and the protein that made us immune to ancient viruses is now causing us to die from HIV.
This is a very interesting article showing us how evolution and time can twist and remake the world in an ironic fashion.
